Panel discussion: Youth political participation in the era of SDGS

12 August is International Youth Day and you are invited to attend a presentation on gendered youth political participation by Afrobarometer using its latest survey data for 36 African countries. This will be followed by a dialogue between representatives of youth organisations. The event is being held in association with the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation and panelists will be from African Monitor (Joseph Eliabson), Youth@SAIIA (Janet Kachinga), Youth Lab (Pearl Pillay) moderated by Ayanda Nyoka (IJR). Rorisang Lekakale (Afrobarometer) will present and join the panel as well.

The report will ask whether weaker political engagement spells trouble for youth empowerment. Are African youth less likely than their elders to engage in political and civic activities? Are African youth engaging with their leaders? and, how engaged are African youth in political/civil affairs? #VoicesAfrica.

This event is part of Afrobarometer’s global releases of new findings from its Round 6 surveys (2014/2015) of almost 54,000 citizens in 36 African countries. The first releases (available at http://globalreleases.afrobarometer.org) focused on citizens’ top policy and investment priorities, infrastructure development, lived poverty, tolerance, electricity, water/sanitation, health, the news media and regional integration.

Venue: Constitution Hill, Old Fort Human Rights Conference Room, 11 Kotze Street, Johannesburg
Time: 8.30am for 9am, 12 August 2016
